I’ve never paid much attention to fame because it’s beyond your control. I live very simply and I don’t do anything to attract attention in my private life. I’ve been very lucky that my parents gave me such good grounding and support over the years. They always let me make my own decisions and that kind of freedom made me take my work very seriously because I understood the responsibility that came with that. I’ve never taken anything for granted in my work. Keira Knightley

“Female stories and female voices are very often missed out on, completely. Very often in every section of culture women are lost. Every actress will say the exact same thing to you. We’re all looking for these interesting, inspiring, complex creatures, but they’re very difficult to find. It’s got to come from female writers, from female producers, from female directors — they’re the ones with the passion to tell stories and go out and get the money. Possibly I should be throwing my hat in that ring. But it means putting the producer’s hat on, not just the actor’s. Maybe that’s something I should do and will do. But I’m very lazy.”

“My twenties were pretty crap. My career was absolutely amazing; in fact, I don’t think my career will ever get better than it was in my late teens, early twenties. But as a person, you’re changing so much and you’re trying to figure stuff out. Some people go wild and have a great time and throw caution to the wind, and I was the complete opposite. I was very shy. It took me a lot of years to try and stop pleasing a lot of people and allow myself to have fun. It’s the difficult thing of getting out of your own head. To stop going, ‘Oh, there’s something I should be doing, there’s a way I should be behaving, I should be dressing….’ All of those shoulds, you can drown in them.”
