To me, moving into my mid-30s has been a calming experience. I have felt a respite, sort of catching my breath, going: ‘Oh, OK, so all those things that that angry, defiant, hopeful, self-berating 18 year old wanted to achieve – we got to a good place.’

[History] was always my favorite subject at school, other than English and drama. But I don’t see them as disparate things: history and drama are about cause and consequence. It’s storytelling. Well, you could argue, some history is storytelling anyway, it’s the storytelling of the victors. But it’s about the human condition. When I wake up on a Sunday morning with a slight hangover, in the gym with no makeup on, that’s who Natalie Dormer really is. The girl next door who gets a spot on her forehead occasionally.
For me, it’s not necessarily interesting to play a strong, fearless woman. It’s interesting to play a woman who is terrified and then overcomes that fear. It’s about the journey. Courage is not the absence of fear, it’s overcoming it.
